Asia-Pacific Regional Chairman Dr. Chao Shou-Po and World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) Secretary General Scott Teare visited the national headquarters of Gerakan Pramuka (GP) on 26th March 2013 and met with the GP Chairman Prof. Dr. Azrul Azwar and other key leaders of the largest Scouting nation, Indonesia. Accompanying them was Regional Director Abdullah Rasheed.
In the discussion, Dr. Azrul briefed the visiting team about the origin of Scouting in Indonesia and its establishment in 1961, and how it was strengthened through a law promulgated in 2010, creating one national Scout organization in Indonesia. He said Scouting is not compulsory in the country, and out of the total Scout age population, which is about 60 million, about one third or 20 million boys and girls joined Scouting.
He also mentioned the revitalization GP has undertaken since 2006 in three main aspects: organizational, strengthening one association concept through law; educational and self-reliance. He explained that the first aspect has been fully achieved, on the educational aspect, five dimensions of Scouting have been emphasized and all sectional youth programmes have been revised and updated and proper publications were already completed. He emphasized the importance of the given translation to many valuable materials published by WOSM and other NSO’s in Bahasa Indonesia.
The visiting team and the GP leaders discussed the current challenges facing the Scout Movement, both in Indonesia and in almost all countries, in meeting the needs of today’s young generation.
